Who is Sound Ideas?
Founded in 1978 and now located just outside of Toronto, Canada, Sound Ideas is the world's largest publisher of sound effects for the professional broadcast, post-production and motion picture industries. We also publish The Mix Broadcast Music Library, and offer a growing number of products for use in multimedia, game and Web design. Our sound effects and music libraries are used all over the world. Sound Ideas is the exclusive worldwide distributor for a number of custom-created feature film studio sound effect libraries, including: 20th Century Fox, Lucasfilm, Universal Studios, Turner Entertainment, Disney Ideas, Hanna-Barbera, Warner Bros., The Saul Zaentz Film Center (creators of "Amadeus"), and Jay Ward Productions - the creators of Rocky & Bullwinkle. For more information about Sound Ideas, please see the About Sound Ideas page.

.
What is a Sound Effect?
At Sound Ideas, we record, design and publish thousands of different single isolated sounds, special effects and background ambiences. These include everyday sound effects like doorbells, car horns and telephone rings, specialty sounds like comedy, fantasy and science fiction FX and musical accents, and longer background ambience tracks to make the listener really feel like they are in places like a courtroom, a church, a train station, a thunderstorm or a jungle. Most of our sound effects are published in pristine Red Book CD Audio format, and the remainder of our high quality material is available as CD ROM-based wav and/or MP3 files - available for ready multimedia use.

.
What is Holophonic Sound?
Holophonic Sound is an extremely realistic type of sound recording invented by Hugo Zuccarelli. For more information, please see "What is Holophonic Sound?" on this Web site. Sound Ideas also distributes the Dimension Sound Effects Library, the world's first and only holophonic sound effects collection.

.
What is Metadata?
Metadata is "information about information" and it is one of the really useful features of digital audio files. Find out more about metadata at our What is Metadata? page.

.
What are Production Elements?
Production Elements - also called Imaging Elements - are audio clips used to sweeten a recorded production, usually for radio broadcast intros, promos, transitions and attention grabbers. For more information, please see our What are Production Elements? page.

.
What are Musical Elements?
Musical Elements are production elements that include a short musical melody, a brief musical chord sequence (also known as a "riff" or a "lick"), or the sound of a recognizable musical instrument being played without accompaniment. For more information, please see our What are Musical Elements? page.

.
What is Production Music?
Production Music is music that has been written especially for use in audio and audio visual productions. For more information, please see our What is Production Music? page.

.
What is Stock Music?
Stock Music is a less expensive alternative to the use of popular or well known music in a production, since it is not necessary to obtain specific permission or pay additional clearance fees for the use of a song that has instant recognition. For more information, please see our What is Stock Music? page.

.
What is Royalty Free Music?
Royalty Free Music - also called Buyout Music - is a specific kind of stock or production music, produced for unlimited use in an unspecified number of applications and productions. For more information, please see our What is Royalty Free Music? page.

.
What is Copyright?
A simple definition of Copyright is the "right to copy, publish or perform". It is a way of expressing the legal exclusive right of ownership. Sound Ideas is the registered copyright owner of its sound effects and music products.

.
What is Synchronization?
Synchronization is the term that describes the way in which Sound Ideas sound effects can be utilized in productions that you create. A sound can be synchronized with a visual presentation (the sound of a creaky door timed perfectly to be heard when a door opens), or with other audio material such as a voice over - as in the case of a radio commercial. A sound can be synchronized for use in many media: television, radio, film, multimedia and audio-visual presentations, Web sites, computer games and music. Sound Ideas' royalty free products are sold with their synchronization rights as described in the Sound Ideas End User License Agreement. Hanna-Barbera and Turner royalty free products are sold with their synchronization rights as described in the Hanna-Barbera & Turner Sound Effects End User License Agreement.

The rights to re-sell, re-publish or otherwise distribute Sound Ideas' sound effects and music are not obtained with your acquisition of synchronization rights to our products. When you use our sound effects and music, they must be synchronized within a multimedia presentation, film, Web site, game, audio-visual production or broadcast.

.
What are Synchronization Rights?
With a synchronization license, you gain permission to reproduce a musical composition within an audio-visual media form (like films, TV programs, commercial announcements, music videos, multimedia or other visual presentations). The music is generally synchronized and/or recorded in timed relation with the visual images, graphic design or voiceover.

.
What does Royalty Free mean?
Sound Ideas' sound effects are sold as royalty free (or buyout) products and their use is governed by the Sound Ideas End User License Agreement. Use of Hanna-Barbera and Turner sound effects products is governed by the Hanna-Barbera & Turner Sound Effects End User License Agreement. When you buy a Sound Ideas, Hanna-Barbera or Turner library, you buy the rights to synchronize the sounds with your productions. While you own the physical CDs that make up the library and you are allowed to synchronize them for use in your productions - the sounds and their copyright will always belong to either Sound Ideas or the copyright holder of the product.

.
What is the difference between Royalty Free and Leased music?
All of the royalty free music represented by Sound Ideas (The Mix Libraries, The Mix Signature Collection, etc.) are copyrighted products, owned or licensed for distribution by Sound Ideas. These products and other leased music products can both be called "Stock Music" - which is defined as a variety of pre-recorded music, generally available at a much lower cost than original music or licensed commercial recordings of popular songs.

With royalty free music, you may purchase the CDs for a one-time fee. The purchase includes the Sound Ideas End User License Agreement (your synchronization license) for the unlimited use of the music in your productions, for life. This kind of music is often referred to as buyout music. Leased music is generally provided on an annual subscription basis, and your license for its use must be renewed on a regular basis, depending upon the length of the license term in your license agreement.

.
What does Public Domain mean?
From the time a piece of music is created, it is protected by Copyright. The international laws governing copyright are the Berne Convention and the Universal Copyright Convention. Under the Berne Convention, copyright extends for the life of the composer plus a minimum of 50 years following his or her death.

Most of the world's industrial countries have signed the Berne Convention and comply with it - although all countries have their own copyright laws which may extend the copyright period for an additional number of years. Many countries have extended this copyright term to a period of 70 years following the death of the composer. Once a piece of music has existed beyond the copyright protection of a country, that piece of music is considered to be in the Public Domain in that country. If you are intending to use a piece of music that is in the Public Domain, make sure that you check the Copyright Laws in all countries where the production will be used to make sure that your use conforms to the laws of those countries.

.
What are Performing Rights?
The composer and publisher of a piece of music generally reserve the right to receive compensation any time their music is performed in public, hence the term Performing Rights. Around the world, performance rights societies (like ASCAP and BMI in the United States or SOCAN in Canada), collect public performance revenue from radio and TV stations and networks, movie theatres and other sources. This public performance revenue is divided among the composers and publishers based on "reported use", which is usually submitted via a Cue Sheet. For more information on this topic see the FAQ section on Cue Sheet submission. A blank Cue Sheet is available for your convenience. Simply print the pdf file, complete the form and fax it to us at (905) 886-6800.

.
What is a Sampled Sound?
A sampler device permits the recording (sampling) and replay (playback) of audio in a digital format - so a sampled sound is one that has been digitized and stored in the RAM memory of a sampler. The sampler allows the digitized audio file to be amplified and manipulated in different ways, for example: playback of the sampled sound at a different speed will alter its pitch. Samplers vary in their purpose and capabilities - some of them can be used to record and edit the different notes of almost any instrument - a piano, a flute, drums, or whatever you need to simulate the sound of a full orchestra or band. Use of a MIDI keyboard with a sampler allows you to "play" a full range of notes for the instrument(s) of your choice. Some samplers are also designed to offer sound effects and accents as well as music and percussion sounds, and many samplers have the ability to "loop" an audio file, which means that you can extend the playback time of the note just by holding down the key longer. Features like these make samplers and sampled sound very versatile for the production of customized audio.

.
What is meant by CD Audio or Red Book Audio format?
Red Book Audio refers to the technical standards that have been set by the audio industry for the physical production of CDs, such as the overall dimension of the CD, the size of the CD hole and how the audio is burned on to the CD. This CD Audio format is not the same as the format of wav or MP3 files. CD Audio is designed for listening on a CD Player. If you have a multimedia program installed on your computer that will play standard audio CDs, you will be able to use your CD ROM drive to play back and listen to the sound effects or music on the CD. Unless otherwise stated, Sound Ideas' products are produced in the Red Book CD Audio format.

.
What is Foley?
Foley recording is a specialty technique, designed to produce simulated everyday and extreme sounds for synchronization and audio sound replacement usage in motion pictures. Without the magic of Foley, you would never hear someone's footsteps in a film - these and many other sounds must be dubbed in again on the film's soundtrack in order to be heard by the audience. For more information about this fascinating art form, be sure to check out What is Foley? by Skevos Mavros, a brief but comprehensive description and discussion of Foley's purpose and features, and of what makes Foley artistry special.

.
What is an Adobe PDF file - how do I get the software required to view a PDF file on your site?
A PDF file (PDF stands for "portable document format") is one created by Adobe's Acrobat software. It displays text in a reader-friendly format - as if it had been created by a word processor or desktop publisher. The reason that it's so portable though is that it can be downloaded readily for screen display or printing by your Web browser and read by any computer that has the free Adobe Acrobat Reader software installed - it doesn't matter if your computer is a PC or a Mac. And yes ... the Adobe Acrobat Reader software is free - download it from http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep.html.

USE OF SOUND IDEAS PRODUCTS:

.
What Rights do I get when I buy a Sound Ideas product?

Royalty Free Sound Effects Products:
Sound Ideas' royalty free sound effects products are sold with their synchronization rights, as described in either the Sound Ideas End User License Agreement or the Hanna-Barbera & Turner Sound Effects End User License Agreement. Performing rights do not apply to sound effects. Except as specifically identified in the Sound Ideas End User License Agreement, you are not authorized to copy or re-distribute our sound effects, unless they are synchronized in timed relation with your production.

Royalty Free Music Products:
Sound Ideas' royalty free music products are sold with their synchronization rights, as described in the Sound Ideas End User License Agreement. Performing rights are not included in the purchase of Sound Ideas royalty free music products. You must therefore report your music use to your local Performing Rights Society, so that performing rights revenue can be paid to the music's composer(s) and publisher(s). Use our Web site's Cue Sheet to report your music use. More information is also available in the FAQ section on Cue Sheet submission.

Except as specifically identified in the Sound Ideas End User License Agreement, you are not authorized to copy or re-distribute our royalty free music - it must be synchronized within your productions, as detailed in the License Agreement.

.
Is there a License Agreement for your sound effects?
Yes there is. Sound Ideas' sound effects are sold under the terms and conditions stated in the Sound Ideas End User License Agreement. Hanna-Barbera and Turner sound effects are sold under the terms and conditions stated in the Hanna-Barbera & Turner Sound Effects End User License Agreement.

.
Can I use Sound Ideas sound effects on my Web site?
Yes, within the following limits... you can synchronize our sound effects for playback only on your Web site, so that button rollovers "bark" or a banner crackles in the "wind". This type of use is absolutely legal. But you are not allowed to distribute our sound effects in any way - whether you intend to give, trade, loan or sell them. You are not permitted to present our sound effects in any way that would allow access to the sound effects or sounds as downloadable audio. This would be a violation of our proprietary property rights and is therefore unauthorized without express written permission from Sound Ideas.

.
Can I use Sound Ideas sound effects in my music?
Yes you can. Under the terms of the Sound Ideas End User License Agreement, this qualifies as synchronizing our sounds with other audio content.

.
Can I use Sound Ideas sound effects in my computer game?
Yes you can, provided that the sounds are embedded in the code of your game and are not available for an end-user to access or download. If your application allows the end-user to access or download unsynchronized sounds, you should contact Sound Ideas to arrange supplemental authorization for the use of the sound effects.

.
I am making a video game for release in retail stores. Can I use your sound effects in it?
Yes you can. Synchronization of our sound effects in this manner is permitted under the terms and conditions of the Sound Ideas End User License Agreement.

.
Do I have to pay you more if I include your sound effects in a production that will be broadcast on radio or TV?
Sound Ideas' sound effects are sold as royalty free products. This means that you do not need to pay any additional money to Sound Ideas if a production is going to be broadcast or performed publicly. If your broadcast production makes use of our royalty free music, you must file a Cue Sheet with your local Performing Rights society. For more information, see the FAQ section on Cue Sheet submission. Our Web site also has a blank Cue Sheet for you to print, complete and fax to us.

.
Can Sound Ideas sound effects be used for live theatre productions?
Yes. Our sound effects can be incorporated into a live theatre production, either through the creation of a cued tape or CD created specially for the production, or through use of a direct cue from the original library CD. These uses meet Sound Ideas' definition of synchronization and therefore fall within the rights granted under our End User License Agreement.

PRODUCTS & SERVICES:

.
Can I transfer your sounds to computer hard disk myself, or have it done for me?
Yes, provided that you own the Sound Ideas products that you want to transfer. If you are setting up a multi-user audio production environment, you need a license from Sound Ideas. Our Hard Disk Information Sheet has been designed to provide full details about this license.

If you decide to sell your hard drive at a later date, however, ALL Sound Ideas audio files MUST be removed from the disc before you transfer ownership. You are not authorised to sell copied versions of our audio files under any circumstances - this practice is an infringement of Sound Ideas' copyright.

.
Can I copy Sound Ideas sound effects or music on to my computer hard drive in order to create a production?
Yes. The synchronization license that you obtain with your purchase of Sound Ideas royalty free sound effects and music allows you to copy the files on to your computer hard drive for the purposes of creating audio and/or visual productions or applications. Your license does not permit the sale, lease, loan or gift of any unsynchronized Sound Ideas audio content. This means that if, for example, you decide to sell a computer hard drive that has Sound Ideas copyrighted audio content copied on to it, you must delete that content before the hard drive is delivered to its new owner.

.
Can I make a back up copy of my Sound Ideas CDs?
No. You are not permitted to make additional back up copies of Sound Ideas CDs or their contents under any circumstances. If you ever encounter a problem with one of our CDs, please contact us to arrange for a replacement copy.

.
I already own a copy of a Sound Ideas library and I need another copy. What are my options?
If you have purchased a library directly from Sound Ideas and you find that you need an additional copy (or copies) of it for your own production or listening use, Sound Ideas can assist you with attractive "extra set" pricing. Under no circumstances are you allowed to make your own extra copy. Mac users can easily access the wav files (for use with software applications like Macromedia Flash), through use of QuickTime 4 (installed with current Macintosh operating systems), or by using an audio editing package like Sound Forge (available from http://www.sonicfoundry.com).

Unless stated otherwise, Sound Ideas' sound effects and music are produced in CD Audio format - not CD ROM format - and will require a CD Player (either a physical player or a computer multimedia player) to play back the contents.

.
When and how should I submit a Cue Sheet to a Performing Rights society?
If you make use of Sound Ideas' music in your broadcast or public performance productions, you must file a Cue Sheet with your local Performing Rights society and with Sound Ideas, so that the composer(s) and publisher(s) of the music will receive appropriate performing rights revenue. A blank Cue Sheet is available for your convenience. Simply print the pdf file, complete the form and fax it to us at (905) 886-6800.

Performing rights societies like SOCAN, ASCAP, BMI and many others around the world, exist for the purpose of collecting public performance revenue from radio and TV stations and networks, movie theatres, and various other sources under international and national copyright protection laws. A portion of that pool of money is divided among the music composers and publishers who create and distribute the music you use in your productions. In order for the composers and publishers to receive this funding, the use of their music is reported by means of a "cue sheet" to the appropriate society. When you submit a cue sheet to Sound Ideas, we ensure that the report is submitted to the appropriate society for tabulation.

Important:
There are no additional fees associated with your submission of Cue Sheets.

When to Submit a Cue Sheet:
Here is a list of the types of productions that should have their music use reported on a Cue Sheet.

  • Film use
  • Theatrical use
  • Broadcast & Cable Television use, such as:
        - Feature performances
        - Background performances
        - Theme performances
        - Logo performances
        - Infomercial performances
        - Promotional announcements and commercial jingle performances
        - Syndicated and locally originating programs
  • Local Television per program licenses, such as:
        - Films and video productions
        - Syndicated programming
        - Locally originating program broadcasts
        - Incidental and ambient uses of music that have been broadcast
If you have additional information or specific questions about music usage and / or music use reporting, feel free to email us or contact your local Performing Rights Society:

SEARCH SOFTWARE:

.
What is SuperSearch?
SuperSearch is Sound Ideas' free sound effect and music search software - an electronic catalog that allows you to easily search for sound effects and/or music tracks that meet your production needs. The software allows you to make comments and notes to save in the electronic file, and you can also print your search results and notes for review and recordkeeping purposes.

Sound Ideas SuperSearch software and data are protected by copyright. This means that if you intend to re-publish the interface or these track & index listings on your Web site, or in a third party product - in any format (print or electronic) - you will have to obtain a supplemental license. Contact Sound Ideas for details.

.
How can I get a copy of your SuperSearch software?
SuperSearch is available free of charge as part of the Sound Ideas Royalty Free Music demo CD, and on our Electronic Catalog CD ROM. To receive a copy of SuperSearch for sound effects & royalty free music, make your request at the Sound Effects & Royalty Free Music Demo Order page or at the Electronic Catalog page. You can also download your own fully functioning copy of the software from the Mac Download and PC Download pages of this Web site.

Sound Ideas SuperSearch software and data are protected by copyright. This means that if you intend to re-publish the interface or these track & index listings on your Web site, or in a third party product - in any format (print or electronic) - you will have to obtain a supplemental license. Contact Sound Ideas for details.

.
How do I update my copy of SuperSearch with your new product releases?
If you have an older copy of SuperSearch that does not contain all of our most recently released products, we invite you to either -

Download and install a fresh copy of SuperSearch from the Sound Ideas Web site. Simply choose your platform and download a brand new copy from either the Mac Download or PC Download page of this Web site.

Or...

Request that a new copy of the software be shipped to you by submitting the request form on either the Sound Effects & Royalty Free Music Demo Order page or at the Electronic Catalog page.

Plus

Install the new 2003 version of our SuperSearch software and make use of our "Custom Add" feature for all future new releases or product purchases - you won't need to re-install the complete database, and you won't lose the details already placed in your Notes field!

.
Can I do a search for sound effects or music right at your Web site?
Yes - our simple Search Engines are available for your immediate use at this Web site. Unfortunately, these search engines do not have quite the full capacity of SuperSearch. If you would like to perform more complicated searches, we suggest that you obtain your own copy of the SuperSearch software - it's free!

.
Can I include your search software in my Web site, or in a product that I intend to distribute or sell?
Yes. But since our search software and its data files are copyright protected, you must obtain a supplemental license first. Contact Sound Ideas for details.

.
Why won't your demo play on my CD ROM drive?
The audio presentation portion of our demo is presented as CD Audio. If you have a CD Player option for your computer, you will be able to hear the demo at your computer. Otherwise, any CD player will play the audio tracks of our demo CD.

.
I am having problems with FileMaker Pro - what could be wrong?
We use FileMaker Pro as the backbone for the Sound Ideas SuperSearch software. Installation instructions are provided on the documentation that accompanies our Demo and Electronic Catalog CDs. Once installed and started, there is a Help file available that we suggest you read thoroughly before you begin your first search process.

The most common problem encountered by our customers is a misunderstanding about the differences between the Royalty Free Music SuperSearch program, the Music Audition SuperSearch program, and the Audio Demo presentations.

Our regular SuperSearch program is available for Sound Ideas royalty free sound effects and music libraries. It allows you to quickly locate the sound effects and/or music tracks you need for your production. There is no Audition feature available in the Royalty Free Music version of SuperSearch. The program is stored in CD ROM format on the ROM track of our mixed mode Royalty Free Music demo CD.

Audio Demo presentations are available for just about all of Sound Ideas' products. They consist of a voice over that details the features offered by the product and an audio sample of the contents of the product. These presentations are stored in CD Audio format on all of our demo CDs.

.
I use Windows ME. Why does it take so long for your search programs to open in my computer?
We have noticed that the time it takes to open our search programs under Windows ME is considerably longer than under any other version of Windows. This has to do with the default extension used when binding the template to the user version of the program. By changing the extension code in the file name to anything else, the files open MUCH faster.

.
Why does FileMaker Pro 2.1 lock on startup when running under Windows 95?
This is due to a conflict with 3 network files - CLARISNW.DLL, NETBIONW.DLL and NOVELLNW.DLL. If you delete these three files which are located in the program directories, FileMaker will run. If you did not change the default install program directories when SuperSearch was being installed on your hard drive, delete these three files from the following directories that have been made on your hard drive: C:\SI-SFX, C:\SI-RFMUSIC, C:\SI-XV, and C:\SI-MUSICAUDITION.

FileMaker Pro can also lock on startup when the font file becomes corrupted. If this happens to you, delete CLARIS.FNT from the C:\WINDOWS\CLARIS directory to fix the problem. This file will be recreated when you restart FileMaker Pro.

.
Why does my version of FileMaker Pro ask me for a password when I open the SuperSearch program?
If you have a complete copy of the FileMaker Pro software, you will be asked for a password when you try to open the version that is included in SuperSearch. This is an idiosyncrasy only - you do not need a password to use the program. Just hit "Enter" on your keyboard or click "OK" to enter the program and everything will work fine. You can even import and export data without the password.

.
I don't want to see all the sound effects libraries for my searches. Can I customize the software to only search on the libraries I own?
Yes. Click on the "Customize" button at the top of the SuperSearch Search Screen, and click the appropriate button(s) from the displayed list to delete the data for the libraries you wish from your version of SuperSearch. It will take a few minutes to delete each library. If you ever wish to include libraries you have deleted, you can reinstall the original SuperSearch program from the CD.

Are ASCII files of Sound Ideas' product track & index listings available?
Yes. Our page of links to tab delimited ASCII text files allows you to import updated SuperSearch CD track and index data into other database applications and software programs that are accessible to the visually impaired.

Sound Ideas SuperSearch software and data are protected by copyright. This means that if you intend to re-publish the interface or these track & index listings on your Web site, or in a third party product - in any format (print or electronic) - you will have to obtain a supplemental license. I use Internet Explorer. Why are some of your PDF files not loading properly?
Try configuring Internet Explorer to use Adobe tm Acrobat Reader as a helper application, instead of as a plug-in. To do this, exit from Internet Explorer or AOL and start Acrobat or Acrobat Reader. Choose Edit > Preferences > General (Acrobat 5.0 or Acrobat Reader 5.0) or choose File > Preferences > General (Acrobat 4.x or Acrobat Reader 4.x). In the Options section, deselect Display PDF in Browser (Acrobat 5.0 or Acrobat Reader 5.0) or deselect Web Browser Integration (Acrobat 4.x or Acrobat Reader 4.x). Click OK, and then exit from Acrobat or Acrobat Reader. Restart Internet Explorer or AOL. You should now be able to view all the PDF files without difficulty in their own window on your screen.

.
I use a Windows PC computer. Why do I sometimes get rows of boxes instead of lines of text when I print your track and index or other PDF files?
This appears to happen to PC users who have Adobe Acrobat (TM) software configured to open up PDF files within their Netscape or Internet Explorer browser window. The best way to avoid this problem is to print by either using the File menu in the top left hand corner of the browser, or by clicking on the browser’s printer icon - in the top row of menu icons (on the right side of your screen). We therefore suggest that you avoid clicking on the printer icon found near the top left in the row of Acrobat icons that is displayed inside the browser window.
